My admiration of Shawn Phillips, his music and his philosophy goes back far too many years than I am willing to admit. Let's suffice it to say that I learned of Shawn and his music after being discharged from the army and knowing full well that the term Vietnam War would forever be associated with a U.S. tragedy that will never be forgotten.
After my army "experience" I was looking for answers but I din't know the proper questions. That's when I discovered the music of Shawn Phillips. I returned to college and for some reason this texan was very popular in the state of Minnesota. After hearing his music, I learned why. The first LP I picked up was Second Contribution. The LP just blew me away. While not a "counter culture" LP it did give me insight into love and life at a time when I believed we were living in a world gone mad. Of course after hearing this LP I just had to go out and get his earlier works as well.
Over the years Shawns recorded works have helped me focus on positive
elements of my life. He has been a guide of sorts and I will never forget my first hearing of Second Contribution as well as the followup LP, Collaboration. Nor will I forget the first time I saw him Live. A Shawn Phillips concert will show you a vocal range you can't believe and will mix acoustic with electric music with out blinking an eye.
To this day I believe that Shawn Phillips could very well be the most under rated singer/song writer/muscian in either folk or rock & roll. That could very well be because his music just can't be categorized. Shawn Phillips music is...well, Shawn Phillips music.
Shawn still has a very loyal following, world wide, and can always be seen talking to his fans after shows. He has released approximately 18 LP's and is constantly touring in the U.S. and Canada. If you have the opportunity, take in one of his shows. You won't be disappointed.
